The peony garden of Ueno Toshogu shrine opens each winter with about 160 peonies of some 40 kinds, coaxed into flower under straw shelters against the snow. The winter season runs from 1 January to late February; a spring show follows in April with about 500 plants. Entry about 1,000 yen.
